Irritable bowel syndrome is an overactive colon and the cause is unknown.
IBS is diagnosed according to specific symptoms: chronic abdominal pain (usually on the sides of the lower abdomen), bloating, abdominal discomfort, and alteration of bowel habits (diarrhoea and constipation). There may also be fatigue and anxiety.
These symptoms are sporadic and unpredictable and occur regularly. The symptoms vary in type, frequency and severity from person to person but are more commonly found in women between the ages of 20 and 40. It is a chronic condition that reoccurs after periods of no symptoms.
