High Volume Injections (HVI)
High volume injections are an effective treatment modality for various inflammatory conditions such as frozen shoulder or Achilles tendinopathy.
What are high volume injections?
High volume injections, are administered under ultrasound guidance at a volume of 40mls-50mls. It is usually made up of a local anaesthetic, and saline solution. Sometimes a corticosteroid is also added. It is injected into the tendon sheath (covering) or a joint which is very stiff.
PRP injections are also available for patients with chronic tendinopathy.
High volume injection procedure
The procedure takes around 30 minutes and we advise resting the treated area for one week after your injection. You should be able to resume your normal activity once the tendon is completely healed.
Swelling will occur due to the high volume of fluid being injected which should resolve within 24 hours. You may also experience numbness which again should last 24-48 hours.
The entire procedure should be completed within 30 minutes, and our SEM doctor will refer you to a physiotherapist specialising in shoulder, Achilles & patellar tendon rehabilitation.
If your injury or pain does not require an injected treatment then our sports doctor can also refer you to another specialist within Freedom clinics.
We treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, both from sporting activities and work related injuries.
For this reason, we provide detailed assessment and examination before a personalised treatment plan is put into place.
