Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid is well documented as a skin care product and many of you would have heard of it from beauty advertisements. However, Hyaluronic acid is actually a lubricating, clear substance that’s produced by the body naturally.
As we age, the acid breaks down and not only does it affect our skin but it also affects our joints as the lubrication that keeps them working smoothly breaks down.

Hyaluronic acid injections are used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis by replenishing that bouncy soft cushion within the knee joint.

This treatment is used when a patient is no longer able to control osteoarthritis pain with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs.

The treatment can reduce pain and improve movement within the joint. It has been suggested that hyaluronic acid injections can also slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.

Hyaluronic Acid injection treatment

A course of 3-5 hyaluronic acid injections can be given over a 4 week period using ultrasound guidance, and if effective can last for up to 6 months.

Pain relief is not immediate and may need more than one injection. Sometimes additional injections may provide longer relief, up to 3 years in some patients.

Long periods of pain relief can postpone knee and hip replacement surgery in some cases.

Other reported benefits to hyaluronic acid knee injections are –

  • Aiding the growth of cartilage
  • Strengthening existing cartilage
  • Protection of existing cartilage
  • Stimulating the body to produce its own hyaluronic acid

There are certain conditions for when treatment is not appropriate, these include –

  • Those with a known allergy to hyaluronate products
  • Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • Patients with bacterial infections

Hyaluronic Acid injection side effects

Hard weight-bearing activity is not advised for 2 days after treatment. Side effects include slight pain, swelling, skin irritation, and tenderness. These reactions generally are mild and do not last long.

We advise a consultation is booked with our Consultant Sports Physician prior to treatment. A detailed assessment and examination can be performed and in cases where injections are not required the doctor can also refer you to another specialist within Freedom clinics.

If you have been advised to seek hyaluronic acid injections or feel this treatment may benefit you please book an appointment by clicking on either ‘New’ or ‘Existing’ patient from the top of this page.
