Infertility is described as being unable to fall pregnant after at least twelve months of unprotected intercourse. Specific symptoms depend on the cause of infertility. There are many causes of infertility, and fertility problems can affect either the man or the woman. It is not always possible to identify the cause.
Causes of Infertility
Common causes of infertility in women include irregular ovulation, blockage of the fallopian tubes and endometriosis; although in 25-30% of cases the cause is unexplained. In men, the most common cause is poor quality of semen. For some people, leading a healthy lifestyle and staying up to date with regular health checks and tests may help to prevent infertility.
Female infertility occurs when:
- A fertilized egg or embryo does not survive once it adheres to the lining of the uterus
- The fertilized egg does not attach to the lining of the uterus
- The eggs cannot move from the ovaries to the womb
- The ovaries have problems producing eggs
Female infertility occurs when:
- Low sperm count
- Sperm that do not work properly
- Sperm being blocked from being released
