What chiropractic is (and when it helps)

Chiropractic is a primary-contact healthcare profession that focuses on the mechanical function of the body — especially the spine and its relationship to the nervous system. Common contributors include posture, repetitive load, deconditioning, sporting overload, stress and age-related change. We identify what’s driving your symptoms and treat what’s modifiable.

Common reasons people see our chiropractors

  • Low back pain (acute or persistent), disc irritation and sciatica
  • Neck pain, cervicogenic headache, migraine prevention
  • Mid-back and rib pain, postural strain
  • Shoulder pain (rotator cuff–related), tennis/golfer’s elbow
  • Hip or knee osteoarthritis flares
  • Wrist, ankle and foot pain related to load or instability

If your presentation isn’t appropriate for chiropractic care, we’ll explain why and direct you to the right service. See Contraindications and Safety & Risks.

What to expect at your New Patient Visit

Your first appointment includes a focused history, orthopaedic and neurological tests, a working diagnosis, and a clear plan. You’ll leave knowing what’s wrong, what we’ll do, what you can do, and how we’ll track progress. Book via New Patient Visit.

How chiropractic treatment works

We combine hands-on techniques with targeted rehabilitation and advice.

Chiropractic techniques (overview). Start with our Chiropractic Techniques hub for when and why each method is used, then explore specific approaches below:

You might hear a pop during manipulation — it’s just gas releasing within the joint and isn’t required for a successful treatment. We choose techniques based on your goals, tissue irritability, and medical history.

Diagnosis, imaging and onward care

We diagnose from your history and examination. Imaging (X-ray/MRI) is arranged only when it may change management or where red flags are suspected. When a different pathway is better for you, we coordinate referrals. See Imaging & X-ray and Informed Consent.

Safety, risks and suitability

Chiropractic care is individualised and risk-screened. We review your medical history, medications and any contraindications before starting. You’ll receive balanced information on likely benefits, alternatives and risks so you can make an informed decision. Explore Safety & Risks and Contraindications.

Your treatment plan

Most plans blend hands-on care with exercise progression and self-management. Visit frequency decreases as you improve. When symptoms settle, some people choose Maintenance Care to support long-term function; others return if/when symptoms recur. We’ll agree goals, review milestones, and adjust dosage accordingly. See Treatment Plan and Rehab Exercises.

Ergonomics & posture

Small changes to your workstation, driving setup and daily habits can reduce symptom provocation and improve recovery capacity. Practical guidance is grouped under Ergonomics, with optional Posture Assessment if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Chiropractors are primary contact clinicians; you can book directly.

Will I always be manipulated?

Not necessarily. We select from several methods based on your assessment. See the Chiropractic Techniques overview for when we use HVLA, mobilisation, flexion-distraction or traction/decompression.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on severity, irritability and goals. We review progress regularly and reduce visit frequency as you improve.

Is chiropractic safe?

Serious adverse events are rare. We screen for risks and discuss options before any procedure. Read Safety & Risks.
