Joint pain is related to any aches, pain, stiffness, crepitus (audible joint sounds), inflammation and discomfort of any of the body’s joints and surrounding structures. Joint pain is very common; knee pain is the most common, however joint pain may affect any part of the body. It can affect any age group but is more prevalent in adults. Joint pain can also be referred to as arthralgia. The most common joint condition is Osteoarthritis which will affect everyone at some stage due to the natural wear and tear of joint cartilage.
What causes joint pain?
Joint pain usually can be a result of arthritis (joint inflammation in one or more areas). However; it may be also caused by other conditions and injuries including; cartilage wear and tear, cartilage damage, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout, joint capsule sprain, strains and adjoining ligament and muscle damage.
What are the treatment options?
For accurate diagnosis, a detailed assessment is the key. Patients can be assessed by either, Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor and Sports Doctor. Clinical history, detailed physical orthopaedic examination and range of motion testing can indicate quite quickly the diagnostic findings. For more sinister cases we may refer you to our sports doctor or an orthopaedic consultant for further investigations and diagnostic imaging such as MRI scans and X-ray.
What are the symptoms of joint pain?
Frequently, joint pain itself is a symptom of other problems but as consequences of joint pain the following usually develop; pain, stiffness, swelling, redness and warmth in the area. There are additionally daily and activity patterns patient’s experience such as pain and stiffness first thing in the morning and at night. Stiffness after activity or exercise and stiffness after prolonged rest periods.
