Podiatry & Chiropody Services for Nails

Medical Nail Cut
A medical nail cut is carried out by our fully trained podiatrists who are experts in dealing with nails of all ages, shapes and sizes. When cutting your nails you need to be careful how you cut them in order to reduce the risk of developing further issues such as ingrown nails or thickening. If you are diabetic or have other long-term conditions particular care must be taken not to cause any issues through nails being incorrectly cut. Our professionals ensure this is risk minimised.

Nail Surgery
This is a procedure carried out by podiatrists for people who have in-growing or problematic nails. You will require an initial assessment booked as a routine podiatry appointment where your podiatrist will discuss the procedure with you; what to expect and answer any questions you may have about the procedure. Depending upon the podiatrist’s examination and advice you may either have a PNA (partial nail avulsion) or a TNA (total nail avulsion):
PNA – removal of part of the nail (this is usually the procedure that is required)
TNA – removal of the whole nail (only in extreme circumstances)

Podiatry & Chiropody Services for Skin Conditions

Verruca Treatments
A verruca is a plantar wart caused by the HPV virus. They lay between layers of the skin and are commonly treated by cryotherapy (freezing), chemicals (acids) and dry needling. Your podiatrist will discuss the options with you and the best course of action for each individual. They can also recommend the best treatments to be used at home. Verrucae are common with people who use shared public spaces (swimming pools, gym, shared showers). Skin conditions of the foot Corns and callus are one of the most common foot issues that people have. They are formed due to friction and or pressure from our footwear and the way we walk. Our podiatrist can easily remove these and regular treatment can prevent the reoccurrence of cracked heels, blistering and discomfort. The current gold standard for treatment is through our Swift Machine, which is the most successful treatment available today.

Custom Foot Orthoses/Orthotics(Insoles)

Custom foot orthotics are shoe inserts designed to support the natural shape of the foot and alter where the force goes through your foot when walking, standing or exercising. Our expert podiatrists prescribe orthotics to treat a range of foot, ankle, leg and lower back conditions.

Freedom Clinics use Europe’s leading orthotic manufacturer to expertly craft the custom-made insoles. Our podiatrist will write a prescription specifically tailored to you. Our experts use a variety of methods to capture an impression of your foot depending on the needs and nature of your condition.

How do custom foot orthotics help?
Custom foot orthotics are prescribed to help alleviate and prevent foot, ankle, knee pain, and improve your balance and foot function in general.

Benefits of custom foot orthotics can include:

  • Support your feet and legs whenever weight bearing to increase confidence and sports performance.
  • Improve chronic and acute sports injuries.
  • Improve weight distribution and posture.
  • Optimise shoe fit, comfort and absorb shock.
  • Alter abnormal foot functioning position to correct many common foot ailments or prevent them from getting worse.
  • Can eliminate low back pain from leg length differences.
  • Improve your balance.

How we make your custom foot orthotics:
When you book an appointment at Freedom Clinics your podiatrist will provide a musculoskeletal assessment including a video gait analysis. In addition, we take a 3D capture of your foot, that creates an exact likeness of your foot in its corrected position. This capture will be sent to a laboratory – designing and creating an insole customised for you.

Special Features

  • No messy plaster casts required.
  • Individualised design that can be adjusted and modified – ID required.
  • Our orthotics fit any shoe type from athletic to dress shoes to football or works boots – even ballet slippers.

Podiatry & Chiropody Analysis

Biomechanical & GAIT Analysis
A biomechanical assessment & gait analysis is where our expert podiatrist will look at the mechanics and way you move. The clinician will look for abnormalities that could be contributing to your condition; whether it’s in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or lower back. They can advise you on exercises to help alleviate these issues along with issuing orthotics made in our specialist laboratory.

Podiatry & Chiropody Devices

Orthotics & Insoles
These are often used for treatment of musculoskeletal pain to adjust foot shape (flat feet) and function. These come in various forms and our podiatrists have searched the market for the best devices to meet your needs and footwear. They will advise you on which device would best suit your needs. The devices are either off-the-shelf (made to a generic shape) or custom made (as all feet are different) to an individually tailored prescription.

Differences between Podiatry & Chiropody:
In reality there are very little differences between podiatrists and chiropodists. The UK changed the name of the profession from Chiropodist to Podiatrist to fall in line with the rest of the world. The name ‘Pod’ originates from the Greek word for ‘foot’. The change was also to protect the professional titles to only enable degree-trained people to use this term. This means all Podiatrist & Chiropodists are fully insured and regulated.

What Is A Verruca?

Verrucae are plantar warts that commonly occur on the soles of the feet or around the toe area. They are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is highly contagious through direct person to person contact. There are various forms of HPV which all relate to various parts of the human body.

What Can I Expect?

Before your treatment, your podiatrist may remove some of the overlying hard skin on the verruca. The Swift probe is held in contact with the skin, and the treatment lasts approximately 2 seconds. This is then repeated by your clinician multiple times to until the desired energy is delivered to the site. Pain levels vary from patient to patient, but most people liken the sensation to a pain similar to an injection or scratch lasting 2 – 3 seconds then quickly subsiding. There is no need for an anaesthetic and or for a dressing.

Microwaves – What Happens After the Treatment?

Most people leave pain free without the need for dressings. In some cases the area may feel tender, but will not prevent you from undertaking normal daily activities.

How Many Treatments will I Need?

This is very individual and can’t be predicted. Everyone’s response is different, but most cases will require three treatments. In some cases, you may need more than three sessions (these are usually 4 weeks apart depending on the response). Your podiatrist will discuss this with you and devise the best plan.

How much does the treatment cost?

Each single treatment with Swift costs £150.00 or the recommended course of 3 treatments, if paid together is £400. If you require more than three treatments, the subsequent treatments are £100.

Please remember that although swift microwave is proven to be the most effective treatment available, no treatment is 100% effective.

Am I Eligible For Swift Treatment?

The majority of clients are eligible for swift treatment, but you will have a full assessment with one of our expert podiatrists to decide your suitability. If you have tried various verruca treatments to no effect, then Swift microwave energy might be for you. Precautions Include:

  • The presence of metal in your foot or ankle
  • If you wear a pacemaker
  • If you have poor or limited healing capacity because of neuropathy or peripheral circulation
  • Patients who are immuno suppressed
  • Pregnancy – the effect of verruca/e treatment is reduced during this time
  • Treatment of young children
  • Patients with a low pain threshold

Gait And Motion Footscan and Phits 3D-printed Bespoke Insoles

Gait analysis allows us to examine your walking or running patterns, identifying potential issues affecting feet, ankles, knees, and hips.

The Footscan analyses gait, movement, pressure, and other factors, supporting your biomechanical evaluations to enhance treatment strategies and results.

The data collected with Gait And Motion technology provides extensive, accurate analysis options and helps us to identify risk zones for possible foot and ankle biomechanics, diabetic ulcerations, and zones where we can offload pressure.

Post-analysis, our podiatrists provide a personalized treatment plan, potentially including exercises and Phits bespoke 3D-printed insoles.

Using Footscan data, we evaluate static stance, dynamic gait, injury risk, and footwear suitability. If necessary, this data is used to create Phits 3D-printed orthotics, uniquely based on dynamic gait scanning.

These orthotics, crafted to your foot’s contours and pressure zones, enhance motion, efficiency, and reduce injury risk.
Crafted from durable, eco-friendly materials, they fit various shoe types, including specialized designs for sports, including golfing, running, cycling, football, skiing as well as options for everyday and work footwear.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

After undergoing Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), most people report an immediate reduction in painful symptoms. Unlike surgical treatments and drug therapies, there are no side effects or time off work needed following ESWT.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is a state of the art, research-backed, non-surgical treatment. Our podiatrists are trained in effectively treating a wide range of lower limb conditions including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis or tendinopathy
  • Patella femoral syndrome

ESWT works by passing low-energy sound waves to the site of injury through the skin, breaking down scar tissue, calcifications and increasing blood supply by stimulating angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the formulation of new blood vessel growth which allows a greater long term outcome. This makes the treatment ideal for treating tendinopathies and fasciopathies. Shockwave therapy is usually conducted as a course of 3-4 treatments over a 2-4 weeks.

Verruca Dry Needling

Verruca needling has been shown to be 70% effective in resolving verrucas after one treatment. This is more efficient than using freezing and acid (chemical) based treatments. There is a short period of dressing the area and then it is left alone for 3 months.

A local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the affected area of the foot. After the area has been successfully anesthetised, the verruca site is punctured multiple times with the use of dry needles – activating the body immune response.

Gait Analysis and Biomechanical Assessment

Video Gait analysis
This allows us to closely analyse the movement and function of the leg and foot whilst running and walking.  We use this information to identify excessive or injuring motions and develop a method to alter the motion so it ceases to cause pain.  Video analysis allows detailed assessment of GAIT and our podiatrists can help to improve the efficiency of your GAIT, helping you to run harder for longer periods. They will use 4K Cameras, apps, software and years of experience analysing human movement and function.

Medical Pedicure

Our medical pedicure is designed to leave you feeling light in your feet by removing all hard skin and tidying any thickened or damaged nails. If you have any corns, they will be removed and advice on preventing them will be provided.
