Cortisone (steroid) injection treatment

The injected joint may feel numb after the treatment, which can last up to 4 hours. We advise patients to arrange transport home after treatment, as driving could be unsafe. Exercise after the treatment, especially types of exercise directly putting strain on the joint that has had treatment should be avoided for the first few days.

Cortisone, generally offers relief directly after treatment, however some patients have reported the effects up to a week after treatment.

Conditions treated with Cortisone (steroid) injections

Unlike traditional anti-inflammatory drugs given by mouth, Cortisone injections offer almost instant relief directly to the area. Cortisone is most commonly injected into a joint such as the ankle, elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, spine and wrists.

Using ultrasound scan technology provides a high precision delivery of the cortisone at the point where it will be most effective and aids the clinician in avoiding passing the needle through areas which may be sore or present other issues. Conditions such as bursitis of the hip, knee or elbow, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinitis, frozen shoulder, and many other conditions are treated using cortisone injections.

An injection can also avoid side effects accompanying many over-the-counter oral anti-inflammatory medications, such as irritation of the stomach. Recovery time does depend on the area of the body which is treated.
