How it works

After blood is taken from the patient, it is then run through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Once the plasma is separated from the red blood cells and other cellular components it appears milky yellow in colour. It is this that then goes back into the affected area to boost your body’s natural healing process.

The Platelet-rich plasma Process

Platelet-rich plasma treatment is a series of injections, where the patient’s own blood is used by centrifuging it to separate the platelets. This is then injected into the affected areas to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints.

The release of growth factors stimulating and increasing for healing to begin takes time and unlike the faster acting treatments of steroid based injections, PRP will not give you instant relief. Pain relief often starts 3 to 4 weeks after treatment, and continues to show improvement over a period of 6 months. Some patients opt for this treatment because it is a more natural way of allowing your body to heal in its own time, without masking pain and potentially causing further injury.

Platelet-rich plasma side effects

PRP also benefits from very limited side effects as the injections are created from your own blood and your body will not reject or react negatively to them.

Patients can continue with day to day activities after treatment, however it is sensible to avoid strenuous activity for a few days after the injection.
