What Conditions Does A Sports Physician See?

1. Sports and exercise-related injuries

Sports injuries could be either due to an acute injury while playing a sport and exercising (e.g., ankle sprain) or due to chronic injury which is related to overuse such as tennis elbow. Our Consultant Physician in Sport and Exercise Medicine has extensive experience in treating elite athletes in various sporting disciplines over a decade and transfers the wealth of knowledge and experience in diagnosing and providing a specific management and rehabilitation program to your needs. He will discuss treatment options and involve you in the decision making in each step of your journey.

2. Overuse and over-training conditions

A holistic approach by our sports medicine consultant allows identifying the causes of the problem which allows to improved recovery and success in treatment. A particular aim is to identify any biomechanical issues which might be predisposing to the problem. Occasionally the problem might lay elsewhere or be inflammatory in nature.

3. Work-related conditions and injuries

Work-related problems are usually due to overuse, poor technique and posture. Typical examples of work-related conditions are wrist pain due to constant use of the keyboard in an office worker and constant use of tools and equipment in a manual worker. Poor posture related to sitting long hours at a desk can lead to neck strain, low back pain, shoulder and elbow symptoms. Like in athletes and recreational enthusiasts, work-related injuries will be addressed by our Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine in a holistic manner.

4. Exercise prescription, health and wellbeing

Physical activity is a key element of a healthy life. Our consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine is experienced in prescribing exercise to anyone even when they have existing medical conditions.

5. Conditions affecting the tendons:

a. Tendinopathy/tendinitis: This is inflammation of the tendons resulting in pain and reduced function.
b. Calcific tendinitis: This is a form of inflammation characterised by calcium deposits in the tendons. This mainly affects the shoulder but occasionally affect other regions.
c. Enthesitis: inflammation of the tendon where it inserts into the bone. Usually due to overuse or an underlying inflammatory condition. A common site is where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone)
d. Tears and ruptures: These are either due to sudden (acute) injury or long term (chronic) degenerative changes
e. Tenosynovitis: inflammation surrounding the tendon and its sheath with or without involvement of the tendon itself (most common: de Quervain’s, biceps tendon, peroneal tendon, tibialis posterior tendon and Achilles tendon)

6. Conditions affecting the joints:

a. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive chronic condition affecting joints. Joints can be painful and swollen with effusion.
b. Inflammatory arthropathy: includes several inflammatory conditions that affect the joints, tendons and connective tissue.
c. Acute injury: sprains during sports and activities of daily living
d. Chronic pain: niggling pain and instability usually due to an old injury
e. Septic arthritis: joint infection

7. Conditions affecting the ligaments:

a. Sprain: usually classified into grade 1 to 3 depending on the severity. Grade 3 sprains involve tears to the ligament.
b. Rupture: complete tear usually due to an acute injury resulting in instability of the joint.

8. Conditions affecting the muscles:

a. Contusions: muscle injury due to blunt trauma resulting in pain, swelling and shortening of the injured muscle.
b. Tears: usually due to acute trauma or injury. This could be near the tendon or the muscle belly.
c. Inflammation (myositis): either due to injury, infection or inflammation

9. Conditions affecting the nerves

Trapped nerves: this is usually due to arthritis in a joint which encroaches the space where the nerve travels resulting in pins and needles, numbness and weakness.
This can occasionally happen due to an injury such as a shoulder or elbow dislocation causing swelling or injury to the nerve

10. Neck and Back Pain with radicular pain

Back pain is very common in adults. Some present with nerve pain due to trapped nerves in the neck or lower back radiating into the limbs. Expert assessment by our consultant allows identification of the structures involved and performing timely investigations to plan treatment options.
