Physical health over 60

It is clear that over the last 12 months many over 60’s, especially those with ongoing health issues, have remained isolated and confined within their home and gardens.

While this has affected everyone’s mental health one way or another, new studies suggest those in the high-risk categories have also suffered physically, with many people reporting a deterioration in their health due to not exercising.

Historically, strong evidence has provided a direct link between physical activity and improving the quality of life in healthy and frail adults in their +60’s. So it is fundamental we do not take it for granted.

Physical health over 60

As we age, we slow down. It is an aim for many people to retire and live out our days peacefully and at our own pace, but many of us fail to consider our health decreasing while we start to take it easy.

Even our mental health can become impacted very quickly when we stop our daily tasks, usually seen as simple, everyday decisions. Yet, they keep our brains active enough to maintain a healthy memory, for example.

Slowing down can also increase our risk of obesity, non-communicable diseases, and other chronic conditions, such as heart disease.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, physical inactivity was one of the biggest health challenges facing older adults globally.

So how can we improve our physical health without feeling the strain?

If you have retired or decided, like many over 60’s, not to return to work after lockdown, you undoubtedly have extra free time. Managing your time is key to keeping a fitness routine which in time will become part of your daily life, just as working days did before.

Over the next few months, more leisure facilities will be opening up, so why not consider some of the ideas listed below –

Fitness classes

Fitness classes are a great way to maintain a healthy weight and meet new people and share your time in a common interest. Sessions such as Zumba can also provide a good laugh with friends that you may not have seen in a while. It’s a great meeting ground and benefits you both mentally and physically.

Volunteer

Some people finish work and decide that they need that working environment to keep their minds active. Why not have a look at local groups which need volunteers to help them weekly. Maintaining common grounds or helping a charity with counterwork could keep you on your feet and give you that warm glow that does wonders for your mental health.

Organised walks

Many people love to explore, and what better way to do it than on your feet. Organised walks can take you around your local park or as far as a ramble on the Peak District. Many organisations categorise walks by age and ability, so you are bound to meet like-minded people, explore areas at your own pace and maintain your joints while maintaining your mind.

Take up a new sport

Sport does not have to be all fast and furious. Many over 60’s continue to maintain a healthy level of fitness by switching to a more “paced” sport such as golf or bowls. Swimming, for example, is excellent for your joint care as it is low impact, and you can float along at your own speed.

Performance arts

Performing in front of a crowd isn’t for everyone, but if you have always wanted to give it a go, now is your time. Join a local theatre that provides weekly acting, dancing, singing and general performance classes. You often find that tea and biscuits are heavily involved as well as a good natter at the end. Not only will it keep you socially active, but it may even provide a new lease for life.

If you currently are not feeling inspired, as many of us during lockdown are, consider simply reaching out to a neighbour. Maybe they need help with shopping or would also benefit from the occasional “walk and talk”. Whatever you decide and whenever you choose to do it, it is really important to keep healthy as we age.

It has become clear that the pandemic is now less about the virus and more about the trends left behind. Many people suffer from mental health issues, and many people are struggling with returning to everyday life.
